Processing Particle Type Explosion - HSB Color Mode Test

Processing Particle Type Explosion - HSB Color Mode Test from moka on Vimeo.

Checking out HSB colours in Processing.- I am currently exploring basic physic and noise behaviour / organic movement of particles- this one is a simple explosion without any noise which still looks pretty sweet.

Boids 2: Additive Blending

Boids 2: Additive Blending from Ryan Bateman on Vimeo.

Edit: I’m having issues getting VirtualDub to produce a video of decent quality that isn’t 800mb+ - anyone able to recommend any codecs? DivX complains if I try using that.

Description: After some reading about Additive Blending in Robert Hodgin’s tutorials (link below), I decided this would be a nice project to ‘beautify’, given the flocking behaviour tends toward little ‘nodules’ (especially once you tweek the boid rules to form little local clusters).

I added the ability to suddenly ‘repel’ boids away from a goal, rather than toward it, simply to see whether they’d maintain flock consistency as they fled. They don’t, simply because the tendency toward the goal outweighs their group behaviour so much. I intend to fiddle with that a bit.

Kinda Boring Personal Notes: Anyhow, it turned out okay, I think. I used about 3 textures and am planning on experimenting with a helluva lot more. As I’m rather new to the 3D / Texture world, well… I guess we’ll see how it goes. I have a lot of free time at the moment, being unemployed, so I want to play with some of the OpenGL stuff.
I rather rigged one of the boid rules (specifically, the tendency toward creating localised mini-flocks) for this, just to be able to see exactly what additive blending did. It was pretty fun to play with them a bit more.

CosmoCrash

CosmoCrash by Clockwork Pangolin: Marc-André Toupin (mySelf:coding and procedural effects and game design) and Sébastien Cormier (sprites and explosions and game design)

The game was shown at GAMMA 01:Audio Feed in Montréal, november 06. The concept of the event was to invite indie developpers to make games that use the live audio feed from performers to trigger elements of the game. Here, beats in the music cause asteroids to pop in, as well as many funky spacey backgrounds effects. The goal of the game is theorically to stay as close as possible to the leading edge of the screen, to make the most points. But personnaly, I find the real goal is more to throw yourself into obstacles and enjoy the show, having fun with friends = D. According to some sources, can be enjoyed drunk as well.

Hands-on Review: Serato’s VIDEO-SL for Visual Vinyl Turntablism

photo3

DJs are spoiled for choice when it comes to melding vinyl turntablism skills with digital mixing. But visualists have had no real mature option. Serato’s VIDEO-SL plug-in promises to change that, when coupled with their Scratch LIVE software and the Rane TTM-57SL mixer. To give the results a real shakedown, we turned to dj rndm and Robotkid, an audio-visual duo out of Boston who had already been frustrated with existing alternatives. Is the VIDEO-SL the breakthrough product visualists have waited for? -PK

rndm_black Scratch LIVE v1.8 and Video-SL 1.0 boast the ability to not only mix video alongside your digital audio tracks but to give it groundbreaking control via Rane’s TTM-57SL mixer (required). After several anxious months of anticipation, we recently got our hands on the fader of Rane’s newest DJ gear to see how well it lived up to the demo shown at last year’s NAMM event. This progression of audio/ video integration seemed too good to be true, especially for those of us wrangling with the likes of Virtual DJ and Ms. Pinky.

When the Video-SL plugin ran for the first time, we knew there was no going back.

Effects, transitions

The Video-SL interface blends seamlessly into the Scratch LIVE window and functions with the same ease and readability known from previous iterations. The plugin includes over two dozen video effects and sixteen different transitions to layer and transform your video content in real-time. Most of the effects and transitions are fairly standard. While Serato has no immediate plans to allow for user-custom transitions and effects, they did tell us that adding new ones is relatively easy, and they say they hope to add new content based on feedback from the Scratch LIVE forums.

Colorama Demonstration

Colorama Demonstration from Knut Karlsen on Vimeo.

This is how the game work:

You start by swiping the cube over the target to start the game. Then 1 color is shown and you have to answer with the right color on the cube. If right (as in the clip) the game advances to next level. If you get it wrong, you have to start from the beginning.

As the game progress the sequence of colors to remember increases with one. Currently it has 40 levels but the record is around 9.

Digital Tools

Tool-Abuse: Fun with Tables

A small, but fun work. Used colored html-table tags to generate pixel-artwork. I think the source-code - result ratio is not very efficient, but at least you can do it. This reminds me of an older work, I’ve seen from Danielle Aubert. This also dealt with tables, but in Microsofts Excel. Also tables, also colorful work.

MIDI Gun - Weapon of Beat Destruction

Like destroying beats? Looking slick while you do it? Getting strip-searched at the airport? Then you, my friend, need to get your hands on a MIDI Gun.

It even comes with a laser in the barrel. My dream for MIDI Gun v.2? Combine it with a Pico Projector and unleash your visual fury in style. Check MIDIgun.com for the full run-down, and GunsNGuitars.com for dangerous music made with MIDI weapons.

Colorama

Colorama from Knut Karlsen on Vimeo.

A game made in Processing.org that uses a RFID enabled tangible user interface (not seen in the video yet). This game is the result of a week long task issued at AHO on the topic of making RFID interfaces.

The clue is to repeat the sequence of colours with the RFID interface. It is a dice with similar colours to the colour patches and can be read on the RFID reader.

The game still wants a few features, but it is enough for the purpose of being an experiment in RFID and Processing.org.

This is the first processing sketch using audio visualization I built. It was created as a final project for a Processing course at the University of Applied Sciences Fulda. As one might guess, it was inspired by the amazing works of flight404. All frames have been rendered into pngs and encoded to video, using mencoder, later. Music is Lamb - Angelica. Made with Processing.
