Jumbotron DS: Nintendo DS on two Laptop Screens

Small DS on big screens. Loopy made it possible and he said, that this fun only cost about 600$, but he used mostly parts from older projects. Technical details available! I’ll bet you can also drive this on two video beamers to get even more power in your hands, but using the pen the video beamer would be more difficult.

Code: Read RSS feeds in Processing

After suggesting to my AHO class that they consider using RSS feeds in Processing, I realized that there is actually no built-in functionality to do so. The XML class built into Processing is too basic to handle feeds, it seems. To remedy the situation I’ve cooked up a quick hack using the ROME library for RSS / Atom syndication.

To run the code below you’ll need to download ROME and JDOM. Make a “code” subfolder in your sketch and paste “jdom.jar” and “rome-*.jar” into it, then run the code as given. The FeedReader and FeedEntry convenience classes take care of parsing the feed and returning the entries with the most common fields included. Error checking is rudimentary, however.

Code - feedParser.pde

The Homebrew Computer Club and Finite State Fantasies

I still can’t hold myself, because I got in touch with the 30 year anniversary of the Homebrew Computer Club, you know, that Club that can be called responsible for the first Apple Computers that were build with Steve Wozniak as the most famous club member. I don’t want to get more into the details here, but that poster below from the Finite State Fantasies and other things that can be found on the rich archive from DigiBarn Computer Museum website are truly brilliant. So get in touch!

Digital Paintings on the Nintendo DS with Colors! and Phidias

The Nintendo DS homebrew scene is growing and more and more useful applications appear. Today we will have a look on two interesting drawing applications. Both follow the approach of “digital painting”. This technique however use bold and blurred brushes you certainly know from Photoshop: Pictures made with this technique really look like painted pictures if done right. Please look at the digital paintings of Mathias Snygg and this amazing tutorial to get into success with this technique. I think a solid background in drawing and painting will be very useful to heighten the quality your pictures - also on the DS.

Colors!

The first application is Colors!, that was developed by Jens Andersson. He solved the questions of usability, GUI and constrains versus flexibility very well. Besides a clear color-selector and the basic drawing functions there also also nice little features like mirroring the picture or watching an instant replay form the painting you made. You can use up to 9 slots to save pictures and replay data as well on your flash-memory or SD card. Note that you can retrieve the data on your PC to reuse or work with the data you made on your portable gaming console.

Phidias

Quite a similar application is Phidias programmed by the Finnish coder Tassu. Phidias has some more functions like colors!, for example smudge or blur. Also in addition you can save your pictures under self selected filenames. The straightforwardness of Phidias is not as high as on Colors!, but both applications are good additions to the homebrew scene to make the Nintendo DS a compact and versatile mobile tool. So let your own taste decide. The ability on both applications to save the pictures makes this good tools for preparing pictures stylo-driven to re-use them afterwards on Mac or PC.

Jari Komppa on Text Mode Demos and the TMDC (Text Mode Demo Contest)

Text and Interview: Martin Wisniowski, September 2007

jarikomppa.giftmdc9-2.png
Jari Komppa and a contribution from TMDC 9

Jari Komppa is one of the leading people around the Finnish non-profit group tAAt ry, that do every year the Text Mode Demo Contest, that is held every year between the 11.11 and the 12.12. He is a programmer and PC demoscene veteran from Finland and still does random things on the scene when he finds the inspiration. He says about himself, that he tends to like “small freaky projects.. for example, I wanted to play Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri again, and wrote a universal VESA driver for Windows to make that happen”. Now you got an first idea.

Why do Text Mode Demos matter?

Interesting things come from limited environments. If you look what happened to the Amiga, or what’s still happening on the C64, the limitations have stayed the same for ages, but people still keep finding ways to make more creative and interesting things with them.

The Text Mode has a very low resolution (or, if looked in another way, a very strange resolution), very limited contrast and very limited and fragmented color space. Once you start to see these not as obstacles but as challenges you may end up with something completely unexpected.

Text Mode Demos!

There are kind of demos, that are even in the demoscene very unappreciated: so called demos in “Text Mode“. Text Mode demos are derived from ASCII-art that went through mailboxes. As ASCII-art developed from building simple scenes to “simulating” graphics with ASCII also animations were build.

img0046.png
Picture from Wikipedia

It is very amazing to see virtual worlds and videoclips with great 3D-effects made just with colored texts and is in fact a special form of computer-based art, best described as animated ASCII art. The website TMDC (literally for Text Mode Demo Contest!) features a competition every year and they make it for ten years now. The prices last year were not that spectacular, but they are searching for new sponsors! There is also a 5 Minutes interview with Jari Komppa available who manages this competition. The TMDC X will be from 11.11.2007 - 12.12.2007.

For a better future I would want more awareness and better prices for Text Mode demo, that are jewels of computer-based art made within nice constrains, unveiling real demoscene power. The complete archive of the Text Mode Demo Contest is available on Pouet.net

Collada Export Plugin for Processing

libCollada allows you to easily export 3D geometry and material data in the COLLADA 1.4.1 format from your processing applications.
Although processing’s drawing methods and COLLADA’s scenegraph based, more complex 3D description format, do not match directly – the library attempts to do a reasonable conversion, requiring no extra API to learn.

Releases

version 0.2

now creates materials & effects generated from standard p5 drawing commands
» collada-0.2.zip

version 0.1

first public release with examples and packaged for p5
» collada-0.1.zip

version 0.01 (08/06/07)

a first rather rough version that can export basic geometry data.

Source

You can checkout the latest revision with subversion from the repository with:

svn export http://svn.infostuka.org/rep/libCollada/trunk/

Useage

Use the plugin in the same way as you would with the PDF or PNG exporter.

libCollada 0.2 released

libCollada now does colors!

the library is getting nearer to being actually useful. it now creates new collada materials and effects for you as needed without writing a line of extra code.

libCollada 0.1 released

finally i found some time to finish a first release of my collada library for processing today.

it’s still quite basic and only exports triangles without any material information.
however there have been major refactorings under the hood that will allow to add new features much easier.

it might output garbage when you try to do something clever but give it a go
- your comments & critics are appreciated!

Yann Seznec on his Wiimote music application Wii Loop Machine

Text and Interview: Martin Wisniowski, June 2007

Next up is another 5 Minutes and it’s a great pleasure to present the work from Yann Seznec, maybe better known as “The amazing Rolo”. He is one of the first who did a real music application for the Nintendo Wiimote controller, the Wii Loop Machine. Besides the pure application he got special awareness, because he definately brought a special flavor in using this controller interface. Check out his almost famous video upon that.

wiimote_rolo.png

Hello Yann. Please something about yourself and what you do.

My name is Yann Seznec and I am a Franco-American musician and sound designer. I currently work with my brother Cory Seznec in Paris on music and sound design for a play at a 13th century abbey. Later this summer I’ll be finishing a masters degree in Sound Design at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Besides I do music and try to make as many different types of music and sound as possible - from Appalachian folk music to interactive sound installations. I also keep weblogging.

Why did you made this tool for the Wiimote?
