Xmas & NY Greetings

Sorry for not having posted so much recently but I was focused on my new website's design and the development of a component for its CMS, that probably I will post quite soon.

Another very exited year is about to end and for me, considering my relocation in London, has been very important / challenging. The bid is still intense, so a part wishing you to spend a very sweet Xmas with your family, I wish you all to obtain the best from your next year challenges.

I hope you enjoy also this, in my opinion mainful, card.

See you next year!

Space and Culture

Maybe the last blogpost this year (depends on inspiration, time and netconnection). Go visit this genius blog: Space and Culture. “Space and Culture is a cross-disciplinary journal of cultural studies that fosters the publication of reflections on a wide range of socio-spatial arenas.” Added to blogroll!

No flickr porn?!

Hey, I am really wondering myself why ther isn’t sex, porn or other expicit crap on flickr. There are in fact some blogs, who select “best of the soft porn on flickr” like softr. But there is nothing explicit on flickr itself. How can this be? Does this stand in the terms of the agreement when signing up flickr and people do agree in fear of loosing their free acount? Do the people at flickr have censorship? Or do they have a technical solution for this? Or maybe all flickrusers are so very intellectual and only apply to sensual and soft?
Also the comments under the more “arousal” pictures always give respect to the people who loaded the pictures up. There is “Hey, cute picture” instead of “I wanna f*** with you”. There are no trolls and no flamewars. How can this be? Are we experiencing the BETA version of the utopian internet?

BlobDetection for Processing

Kaleido3D

BlobDetection for Processing is updated ! Now the library is allowing you to compute polygons for each detected blob on an image, in addition to its bounding box and edges list. The online documentation was refreshed with new interface functions description. I created two examples :

BlobDetection_Video
A simple example that shows how to cut the biggest blob on a video image and that renders it as a textured/filled polygon.

BlobDetection_Kaleidoscope
A slightly more complex example that is based on the previous one. The biggest blob on the video feed is cut and rendered in 3D with rotation and translation transformations alongside with some additive blending effect (as shown on screenshot).

Both applications were programmed with Processing 0098 Beta. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to export them to exe… Seems there is some kind of path problem, all I get (on PC) is a black window. Argh.

musictheory.net

Ricci Adams has compiled an amazingly useful resource on music theory (intervals, scales, the likes) for laymen, complete with Flash training apps. I’ll make a new year’s resolution of using the interval ear trainer, scale ear trainer and chord ear trainer at least five minutes per day until I get it right.

Aqueous

Talk about tangible computing. Aqueous is Zehao Chang’s MFA thesis project. Water droplets fall from the ceiling into glass tubes - calibrated to ring over a span of two octaves. The water droplets themselves are computer controlled, via a system of actuators. The software for the system was developed in Processing.

Scripted Tweening News

Daniel Wabyick from fluid.com has updated his Tween Playground and the underlying Fluid Tweener Class so it plays nicely now with AS2.0. So if you are not satisfied with Flash’s out-of-the-box Strong.easeIn or Regular.easeInOut but want the full Penner Easing Package you should check it out.

And you also might want to have a look at Filippo Gregoretti’s new blog Pippo Flash that he just started with his Smooth Mover class which is an easy way to generate scripted organic looking tweens.

This is the kind of installation work that probably has to be seen to be fully appreciated. The quicktime movie does a passable job of letting us peek into the experience, but I would really love to check this out in person.

What the site doesn’t tell me is where it is. Since Mr. Chang is a student of Casey Reas, I’m going to assume it’s in California.
