NetzNetz

NetzNetz is an Austrian community of net art groups, -initiatives and technicians, which is working on an interesting and ambitious alternative to the current system of distribution of government grant money for net art projects in Vienna. Instead of relying on the local government to remain up to date on technical developments, able to judge digital art and distribute art funds fairly, an experimental pilot project will put the distribution of grants in Vienna in the hands of the community itself, via the use of a reputation based voting system.
Critics fear that the system could lead to “cannibalism” within the scene, in that everyone would be pitted against everyone else, that it would lead to a system where those who make the loudest thunder receive the most money, at the expense of long-term projects and the participation in international projects. On the other hand, proponents of the idea cite its advantages as being democratic, transparent, non-bureaucratic and based on participation and the rewarding of collaboration.

Create your own tools in Illustrator with scriptographer

Scriptographer is a very nice tool. You can use javascript syntax to create your own tools for Adobe Illustrator. I formely worked in processing and used whether the AI-Export Libary or made screenshots. Now with this tool i’m able to directly made custom pencils in Illustrator and free myself from the tools that thousands of designer use everyday.

How does it work? You work with an API. There are basically four events: init, mouseDown, mouseUp and mouseDrag. So nothing special for people who are well familiar with processing or graphic scripting. The only thing to get into is the API for the Illustrator-specific tasks.

Finally you can abuse the software and work on experimantal edges like autechre does on music. There was an early piece of softwareart called auto-illustrator that lead into that direction early, but the auto-illustrator really lacked on performance and shareware-fee.

Dale McCready is experimenting with arranging particle and attractor images in 3D using After Effects. The test movie looks really nice.

Toxi’s idea space experiments are a pure Processing implementation of a similar concept.

Blob Detection with Flash 8

I made a web cam blob detection with flash 8 player. To see this, you need flash8 public beta player.
It recognize not only pixels but also area of dark colors.
Still need some refactoring, but seems quite fast.

piccys on wall

I was surprised at how many people came!

I was surprised how many people couldnt see the faces in the pictures! Its lucky I left my mini laptop screen in view cuz everyone seemed to see the face when I pointed in its general direction…

I thought they were pretty obvious

though maby thats because Ive been staring at them for weeks!

and finally a funny picture of general amazement or most probably (and more likely) confusion (I dont think Id fully explained it to them when the picture was taken)

heres a link to Imans flickr thingy with more pictures of the show (lots of other peoples work on there, definately worth a look)

so yeah thats it Im knackered… and weve got to take everything down on Monday, ah well.

The Color Project

Martin Wattenberg (one of the teachers I just had) has finally annunced an application he was working on in those days.

Many compliments for the idea, the effort to collect and organize all the data, the accurancy in the options and not for last the incredible code optimization that permits those stunning performances. Very impressive interactive map!

Finally I got Cyborg V0.1

How far can you go beeing independent from local surroundings?

With my new iPod mini I have made a big step into this direction. Always, always, always listening to music, to new music and to good music is a must have for people like me who own a label. Most music I hear come directly from the net or via mail. I am constantly downloading music, listen to it and deleting it again. Downloading, consuming, deleting. It is all in the net for free, so I can always download it again if I want to. The same with software. I try to go 100% free software. There is the same mode: download latest version, install it, delete installfiles. I really have no need for local software- or musicstores anymore (since the stores in Kaiserslautern are really bad equipped.)

I get recommodations by audioscrobbler and del.icio.us. Theese systems work pretty fine. The recommodations are really good and mostly are high quality content. And while heading for netmusic and free software I don’t have to swap any dime. Costs for living decreases and it makes me really independent from local surroundings. And this is a very big contrast to the annoying, boring and low quaility life out there in “reality”. Just compare products from any store to products delivered by del.icio.us.

When outside, I have the music, I have some sketchbook, my mobile computer and a digital cam by my side. What I still have to enhance is steady connection to the net - everywhere, i.e. for live-blogging. Also fast and quick live-coding could be enhanced. (You would not pull out your laptop on a streetcorner to quickly sketch some lines of code.) But i think the processing for mobiles project has a pretty good the chance to solve this problem.

So my cultural life is somehow depending on a flatrate and the USB-port.

Generator.x
By now you’ll probably have heard about the Generator.x conference and exhibition initiated by Marius Watz that will take place in Oslo from the 23rd of September on. Aside from information about the conference, the Generator.x site features a blog which is rapidly becoming a great resource, spotlighting artists, theory, projects and software, all neatly categorized.
